Heres one of the commentaries I recorded today along with photos of damage from a listener in New York. Sapsucker Prevention July 17, 2014 HOWARD GARRETT, THE DIRT DOCTOR HERE WITH SOME ADVICE ON HEALTHY LIVING. There are those who say that holes drilled in limbs and trunks by birds is just cosmetic and doesnt hurt the tree. Thats incorrect in two ways. The drilling indeed does hurt and can kill trees. Secondly, the work of these woodpeckers indicates serious stress in the trees. When a tree is in stress, the sugars concentrate to provide nutrients to help fight infirmities and to help repair injuries. Certain animals like sapsuckers, squirrels, rats and other rodents can detect that change. The injury from these animals is a solvable problem. First, splash hydrogen peroxide on the wounds, then smear on Tree Trunk Goop which is one third each of compost, soft rock phosphate and natural diatomaceous earth. Then apply the Sick Tree Treatment to improve the health of the trees. Use gentle organic fertilizers only; use none of the high nitrogen synthetic stuff; make sure the soil is aerated rather than compacted; maintain the proper soil moisture, and remove the soil from the root flares. Arborists can do this work with the Air Spade or Air Knife.
