Heres something a bit different from me... captured during a photo-walk around the little village of Genadendal... which is located less than 5 km from the town of Greyton. Genadendal is steeped in history... it was established in 1738 by a young Moravian missionary named Georg Schmit... who named the town Baviaanskloof. The town flourished until the end of the nineteenth century and the first Teachers’ Training College in South Africa was built there in 1838. Genadendal also opened the first guest house and chemist shop in the interior... and in 1830 it had one of the best public lending libraries at the Cape. However, things began to unravel in the 1860s... when factories began mass producing products that were much cheaper and people turned away from the hand-crafted items that Genadendal was so famous for. Residents had to leave the village and head to the city in search of work, which brought with it all kinds of social problems. Today Genadendal, with its 3 500 registered occupants, is a forgotten, remote, underdeveloped and run-down village. But the town is extremely photogenic... especially the old part with its crumbling old Cape Dutch cottages... narrow streets... and friendly vibe from the local inhabitants. These kids were literally begging me to take their photo... no forced smiles here... despite the apparent poverty... their lifestyle is a happy and contented one.
