Heres something special from Amy Larson, who does our recipe pages: If you’re going to take the trouble to mix up something in the kitchen, it might as well be something that lasts. This is your ticket to being the “fun” mom/ dad, grandma/ grandpa, aunt/ uncle. We’ve given these ornaments away as gifts, with rave reviews. Salt Clay Ornament Recipe 2 c. baking soda 1 c. cornstarch 1 ¼ c. cold water In a saucepan, mix baking soda and cornstarch. Add water, cook over medium heat, continuously stirring. Look for the mixture to be the consistency of mashed potatoes. (This takes about 10-15 minutes). Put mixture on plate and cover with damp cloth. When cooled sufficiently for handling, pat to smooth. On wax paper, roll to ¼ inch thickness. With cookie cutters, produce shapes, then create hole at top using a toothpick, (for hanging on tree purposes). Place on baking sheet and bake in oven at 200 degrees for one hour or less. Can also be air dried overnight. Paint, and if you want a glossy finish, apply clear coat (and sprinkle glitter on top, if desired). Thread with string, twine, wire decoration hangers. To make it a keepsake, paint the name of the creator and date on back. Amy also has a recipe for Festive Gingerbread Cake that will be in the December issue of the magazine. Youd better subscribe. You wont want to miss it!
