Heres the 64 Bug I built in 1988. I put my heart and soul into making it the best I could. Money was short and I had do buy and sell VWs to make the money to pay for parts and paint. The 1835cc engine was out of Jez Hoyes grey Ghia and the wheels were £100 with tyres from a Porsche racer - I didnt replace the tyres as I couldnt afford to. It had a 720watt Alpine sound system with an Alpine CD head unit (in 1988 you rarely saw cars with CD players - not that having one in a lowered VW with 50 series front tyres proved a good idea as it skipped more than it played!) With this car I took my first ever award - A Top 10 at Bug Jam! And ran my first quarter miles. It ran 15s which was stout for a UK street car at the time. I went to as many VW shows as I possibly could, and loads of the big M25 raves and London clubs - and with the sound system it had, the after party started when you left for home. This car was exactly what I planned it to be in every area, it was loud, loud and LOUD. If it hadnt been driven off a cliff in Cornwall, Id love to own it again now. These pics are for Gareth Lawton - as at 13 he wouldnt have known what a cool VW was. Hed have probably been at the youth club trying to sneak his grubby mitt up the front of a trollops market bought burgundy and grey Gallini sweatshirt - for the 12th week on the trot...
