Heres the deal, white folks have given up on the belief in a functional democratic society with economic justice and equality for everyone in exchange for feeling superior to people of color and being able to flaunt that false superiority through derogatory, dehumanizing, self-congratulatory attacks on communities of color. While so many white folks are fighting tooth and nail to deny the reality of racism experienced by communities of color, wealth and genuine power are concentrated into fewer and fewer hands. Racism robs white people of their humanity, makes us illiterate of the values of democracy and equality, and blocks economic, gender, environmental, and social justice for all - in exchange for a socially supported and approved ability to demonize and blame communities of color for everything. White folks committed to holding people of color down in the ditch, rarely realize that they themselves are living in that ditch too. Its time for something different, time for white folks to wake up to how were being played, how were being turned into monsters justifying the killing of children and young people, to realize who are real friends are, who we are culturally and socially indebted to for maintaining and fighting for visions of a better world, and who we should be allied with. Black Liberation is key to collective liberation. This is the challenge and opportunity for white people in this historic time of crisis and courage.
