Heres the latest report on our DoorStep Gardens in Kenya: GCKLK Doorstep Garden and Poultry Keeping Report 2014 For the last two years GCLK has change lives of hundreds of families in Kiandutu slums Thika by creating bag gardens for various groups. When it was started and being the first of its kind in the area, some targeted groups were skeptical as always when a new program is introduced to a community. A considerable number however embraced the concept and are the most beneficiaries Achievements As I was joining GCLK in November 2013, a total of 400 bags had been made. By October 2014 over 600 bags had been made for 500 families. This relates to almost 1000 children having been rescued from hunger related deaths. Over 150 new members have been trained and assisted to make their own bags during the period. The same number also received training on how to make organic liquid fertilizers, organic liquid pesticides, and other related farming techniques during that period. From 10 seedbeds made during the period, thousands of seedlings which included kales, spinach, tomatoes, onions, egg plant, black night shade, and assorted parsley were distributed to all garden members for their bags. Hundred litters of organic liquid fertilizer and pesticides prepared and distributed to gardeners. The residents of Kiandutu are always struggling to meet their end with majority either having 1 to 2 meals a day while a good number goes to bed hungry. For this bag garden has helped to alleviate hunger and poverty among local folks. Some members are now able to feed their families with fresh vegetable from their bag gardens. Some members share their vegetable with their hungry neighbors and relatives. Some members sell excess produce from their bags, saves and used proceed to supplement their income, purchase other households like furniture, and utensils. After seeing how bags are doing in their neighborhood, some residents recently started bringing their own bags and asking for assistance on making and care of the bags.
