Heres the latest update on our 16 y/o VAWS member Joseph Martin from his mom Mary. Please continue to keep Joseph in your thoughts and prayers. We think its tomorrow, but were still waiting for confirmation, but it seems to be that surgery will be in the morning. Marsha in Dr. Sponsellers office is a miracle worker and has been trying to find space for him. If they cant fit him in tomorrow, they will do it on Saturday. Joseph is doing much better. All of the blood work looks good and he has a great appetite. He is, however, still in a lot of pain, but handling it remarkable well. The plan is for them to go back into surgery and clean out the wounds (one between his shoulder blades and the other in the small of his back) and put in new sponges and keep those to vacuum, then check again in 5-7 days. Then they would either close or repeat the sponge/vac procedure. Best case scenario is that they open up tomorrow and all the pockets of fluid/infection/drainage are resolved and they are satisfied that all of the infection is cleared out of there and they can close him up without replacing the sponges or wound vacs. I wont know until the doctor comes out of surgery and tells me what they encountered and decided and Joseph wont know until he wakes up in recovery. The girls are handling things swimmingly and I am so grateful for all who have stopped in to check on them or brought them a meal or a visit. Ive hated being away from them so long and this is the first time that they successfully convinced me that they could handle it on their own. Usually, I know Im leaving and have things in place. This was a surprise stay and is moving into week 3... We are so blessed to have so many angels in our lives. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Im sorry if this is scattered and less than coherent.
