Heres the pic of the bus. It still sits there today. To the back of the bus is a flat spot where the cabin sat. When the government expanded the State Park and built the lodge and golf course they forced Granny to sell. It broke everyones heart. Dont get me going on eminent domain. In my mind not all that is legal is right, but I realize thats my option. Anyway, the gov. floated the two cabins away and used them for offices. Flat areas and memories are left. You can get a glimpse of the lake through the bus. You can see that the view from the cabins and the bus was beautiful! I remember being down there when we took the bus down there after it was de-seated to make room for beds. Earl used his loader to move the bus. Daddy somehow steered it with a ten foot crow bar stuck somewhere around the axle. I always remembered where it came from. It had Polar Bluff , Mo. written on it. Later after the forced sell Mama and Daddy bought a lot at Happy Landings and we had a trailer on the lake. It wasnt the farm but still lots of fun and great memories many with Matt Muckler. What I thought was neat was that Mama and Daddy had an 8 track player. They had a Porter and Dolly tape that had as one of the songs Forty Miles From Poplar Bluff. Always thought of our bus when I listened. Pretty neat lyrics too. Here they are:Forty miles back in Missouri theres a different way of life where a man thinks on his neighbor and not his neighbor wife. Life is far from fancy sometimes mighty rough but contentment makes it worth it forty miles from Poplar Bluff. Theres something relaxing about those words.
