Heres the primer on screening tests. Early Detection for Cancer Is a Risky Business https://drmcdougall/misc/2014nl/aug/early.htm The research indicates: - No on PSA tests - No on PAP smears after age 50 - No on DRE (Digital rectal exam to check prostate) - No on mammography - One sigmoidoscopy (shorter version of colonoscopy) between age 50 and 60, and then no more. If youve done a colonoscopy, youre covered These recommendations are for the general population on the Standard American Diet (SAD). For those following the healthier diet that Jeff Novick, MS, RD, and Dr. McDougall, MD recommend, the potential benefits are even lower, making the harms far greater by comparison. Family history is not important on a genetic level. Studies indicate that the individuals that live the longest have the exact same genetic risks as the rest of us. The thing that IS important about family history is that diet and lifestyle often pass along family lines, so if our parents smoked and ate bacon every day, we are likely to as well as we tend to emulate their habits. The biggest thing we can do for our quality of life and overall health is to improve the diet/lifestyle, as this is how the healthy, long-lived people managed to be healthy and long-lived. Human Genes are Turned On and Off by Diet https://drmcdougall/misc/2013nl/sep/epigenetics.htm Research has been done on the McDougall-style diet versus the SAD in terms of the ability for the body to fight off cancer. The SAD allows the human immune system to kill off cancer cells at a rate of 1x. The McDougall-style diet allows the body to fight off cancer cells at a rate of 8x. Thus, we likely have an 8x better immune system, and, likely, an 8x better chance of preventing, treating and reversing cancer, when following a McDougall-style diet. From the above: The first study was actually done by both the Pritikin and Ornish groups, and, as he describes, was 8x better than the SAD [Standard American Diet] in fighting prostate cancer cells (9% vs 70%) ... He then moves on to breast cancer to show the power of a plant based diet in just 2 weeks in its ability to both slow down the growth rate of several types of breast cancer cells and also to actually kill breast cancer cells. ... In the third Pritikin study, he looks at the effect of exercise and a plant based diet on cancer cells. In this study, they compared the control group (sedentary SAD) to those on the SAD for 14 years who exercised heavily and to those who were on the plant based diet with moderate exercise for 14 years. The Pritikin diet was 2x as powerful. The Pritikin and Ornish programs, as indicated in the studies, fell closer to McDougall/Novicks current dietary recommendations at the time the studies were conducted. More recently, the Pritikin and Ornish diets have become more liberal, potentially in an attempt to attract more participants. Thus, I would still strongly recommend McDougall/Novicks guidelines, especially Novicks, as he worked for the Pritikin center as Director of Nutrition before the diet became more liberal. (https://drmcdougall/forums/viewtopic.php?p=432908#p432908) The World Health Organization and other major health organizations agree, and feel that by following the minimum recommendations for a healthy diet/lifestyle, we can avoid up to 60% of our chronic diseases. Novick believes that by following the diet/lifestyle he recommends, we can avoid at least 80%. The Real Dirty Dozen: The 12 Deadliest Dietary & Lifestyle Factors & What You Can Do About Them https://drmcdougall/forums/viewtopic.php?p=441210#p441210 [Outlines the rationale for the diet/lifestyle recommendations] Heres the primer for the Novick recommendations: https://drmcdougall/forums/viewtopic.php?p=474530#p474530 Its all about diet/lifestyle if we want to be healthy. Medications, surgeries, and screening tests pale in comparison. I hope that helps. Please let me know if I can be of additional support. Love, Michael
