Heres the season opener for the upcoming season of American Idol - shot entirely by my crew, led by Justin Schack (Director/DP). We had a fun time on this one, shooting in some cool locations. I remember fondly when we went back to Justins place after the day at the beach to offload and begin transcoding the footage. When Mikey, Justin and myself got to see some of these clips on the big screen for the first time... there was excitement in the room, for sure. Its cool knowing that we were the first people to ever see these clips, which have now been seen by over 84,000 people in the first 24 hours on YouTube (plus surely millions more when it airs on January 7th). One shot that Im particularly proud of is the rooftop shot, the angle where the camera is down below and is pointing up at the group (at 1:00 and 1:59 into the video). Shooting from this angle was my suggestion, and it turned out to be one of Justins favorite shots of the day. Originally, I was just suggesting that shot for one particular contestant who we were shooting with - but when we got down to that level of the roof, and Justin saw the angle (in combination with those great clouds), he called for every contestant who was on set at that moment to get up on the roof (We only had 12 of the 24 with us at the time). Excellent work here by Justin and Brent Barbano with the RED Dragons, Matt Isgro pulling focus on the Movi shots on stage, Stabilizer Mikey for keeping our camera stabilizers going (even in some windy and rainy weather, which Movi does not like), Derek Lynch with audio on the first night at the stage, Darran Webb leading the lighting crew on the first night on the stage, and Jaymi McClusky keeping us all in line, and the rest of an awesome crew that kept us going over those few days (and post-production by Burnish and Chainsaw!).
