Heres the thing: I recall seeing the first moments of The Newsroom. It was released on YouTube as a way to entice viewers to sign up for HBO. I do not know if that tactic worked. I DO know that Cindy and I are Sorkin fans. I DO know I dont agree with his politics. I DO know his work is impeccable. I expected brilliant. What we saw was sublime as we huddled in front of my computer screen watching..... honesty. That series opening sequence makes the rounds on occasion. People find it as though its something new. (Personally, I think it finds them. It is THAT alive to me.) Its fresh with each reviewing. But the SERIES. The complexities and levels of recent history combined with humor, honesty and hindsight swirl in a hopscotching game with chronology. I fancy myself an expert on television history. This show stands alone. That scene, by its very existence, reminds us of what television set out to be. Sorkin is as great a marionette master as he is a playwright. And his characters are not the only ones whose strings are deftly manipulated. I find my arms and legs moving uncontrollably at times while watching. (David E. Kelley has this power as well. I was launched from my snoozing recline the night he disposed of Rosalind down the elevator shaft.) I am now a viewer of HBO due to interesting circumstances and Cindy has thanked me time and again as we binge watch the second season of the Newsroom. Weve waited quite some time and I like the continuity of several episodes at once. Ill hate waiting a week when it returns. No spoilers, Im not through it all yet. But if you do not have HBO.... FIND THIS SHOW. Heres that opening scene.... again.
