Heres the thing about the trans-girl furor. Im happy being cis scum. I AM CIS SCUM FOR LIFE. But I know - all too well - what it is like to know that your body utterly despises you. Ive seen both myself and my sweetie decide on things, and then be firmly vetoed by our bodies. So I understand knowing that your body is your enemy, and the sense that you were born wrong. I understand it all too well, due to my various maladies, health issues, deformities, etc etc. I also know that hormones are tricky things, and that we are all first female in the womb, until chemical processes figured out by people much smarter than myself determine the way the infants body is formed, and the gender he or she exhibits. My opposition to circumcision has led me to research topics such as the sinister Doctor Money (sounds like a bad Bond villain), a shrink who was determined that gender identity is learned, not something inborn. He used the case of a child whose penis was destroyed during a routine circumcision to prove his theories. The only problem was this child, David Reimer, knew that she was a he. Even without a penis, he knew better, he knew what he was and who he was, even if the demented Money wanted to force him to adopt the female role. Reimer eventually killed himself due to a variety of factors, including the gender identity issue and the loss of a penis, troubles with his wife, etc etc. Thats what, to me, makes gender identity different from nonsense like otherkin and otakukin and so forth. People can have very confusing, conflicting hormones, people can be born hermaphrodite or without genitalia at all, with excessively small penises or vaginas, with various other situations and problems, etc. Ive done research into, and lived among, evangelical fundamentalist Christians. I dont doubt that Leelah was given no support, and treated as if she were some sort of pariah or freak. If I got a bunch of shit from people for the horror of wearing Ozzy and Maiden shirts, I cant even imagine what she got. Her suicide was selfish, and foolish, and rather immature - but then, I say that from the perspective of someone who is much older and, while certainly not in her situation per se, definitely suicidal for much of my life. And her parents are still refusing to abide by her wishes or show her the respect she ought to have. People who claim that parents are being forced into coddling or whatever are simply wrong. If nothing else, whats the harm in humouring what you merely believe to be a phase? Ok, you want to be known as Leelah and called a girl? Well, ok, but when this is over, well all laugh about it. Maybe it wont be over, maybe it will - but gay re-education camps and such dont work. They have no scientific basis. They cant make someone gay - or trans - change any more than they can make me want to be a female or be less attracted to females.
