Heres the thing with the Facebook messaging app meltdown everyone is losing their minds over: First of all, agreeing to fine print with the stipulations that are concerning people with, for example, the Facebook messaging app on a smart device, is nothing new--Facebook is just an easy target to which everyone can relate. I promise, if you have at least a handful of downloaded apps on your phone, youve signed away on similar agreements. The bullet points people seem most uncomfortable with are the access to camera, photos, video, contacts, and microphone. Facebook is asking permission to your photos, still camera, and video camera for anytime you send a photo or video already stored on your phone via a Facebook message or if you would like to take a photo or video to send while active in the messaging app. You know how so many apps have pop-ups that read, this app would like to acess your photos. And then it gives you an allow and dont allow option? Its the same thing, except now Facebook is just eliminating the annoying pop-up question that always occurs that you most likely always agree to. Facebook isnt spying on you through your camera. Access to contacts is so that Facebook can sync up with the same names in your contact list or email address book. That may not seem convenient or necessary to you (it doesnt to me), but a lot of people like that feature. The microphone issue is so that you can use voice text in a message. The same way you do with voice texting. Or voice internet search. Or Siri. I dont want to come off like a smarty pants, but seriously, people are flipping out over nothing new or out of the ordinary. Theyre using the very product theyre preaching they disagree with to let all their friends know how much they disagree with it. Those articles floating around about Facebook privacy are so heavily biased in their language and words are being twisted every which way.
