Heres the written version of the update now airing on our stations: Officials at the Rowena Fire have announced that all properties that were previously in a Level I evacuation zone have been upgraded to a Level III mandatory evacuation. 75 homes had already been on mandatory Level III evacuation notices...on Highway 30 from the 5500 block west to the 6200 block. Now about 200 residences that were on a Level I evacuation advisory to get ready to leave between the 4800 block of Highway 30 at Interstate 84 exit 82 west to the 5500 block of Highway 30...including Murrays Addition, Foley Lakes, Simonelli Road, Tooley Terrace, and Adeline Way...are now on Level III mandatory evacuation notices. In addition...residents of the Division Street subdivision have been placed in a Level I evacuation zone...indicating they should be prepared to leave. Fire public information officer Justin DeRuyter says fire activity picked up when winds strengthened at about 6 p.m., leading to the decision to issue the evacuations as the fire made a run to the east toward The Dalles. DeRuyter added all available structural protection crews have been sent out to protect homes...including those that had been bedding down for the night. He added they do not know if any structures have been lost at this point. The Wasco County Sheriffs Office also has a hotline for road closure and evacuation notices...541-506-2792. The American Red Cross has moved its shelter for displaced residents to Dry Hollow Elementary School at 1314 East 19th in The Dalles. Highway 30 is closed between The Dalles and Mosier...and Interstate 84 motorists should expect congestion due to smoke and firefighting activity. Updates are being issued on a Facebook page...Rowena Fire Oregon 2014...and the Twitter feed at-rowena-fire-2014.
