Heres two letters from todays paper. Starving the government Gov. Mary Fallin has expressed her concern for the citizens of Purcell and Lexington whose lives have been affected by closure of a bridge linking the two cities. The bridge was built by the government, which is the people sharing their money for the common good. Governments police our streets, educate our children, fight fires, build storm and sanitary sewers and collect garbage. Today, Oklahoma cant afford to adequately staff its prisons or protect its foster children or even keep bridges in good repair. The state gives massive tax breaks to the wealthy and Big Oil to starve the government. In five years, when Fallins tax breaks are costing state government hundreds of millions of dollars a year, Oklahoma — like Louisiana under its Republican governor — may be hiring teachers from the Philippines. Our constant interventions have little positive influence. Plus, they drain the budget and sap military strength. In addition, much of the free world has slashed their military spending because they can count on the U.S. forces. The world has no shortage of bad guys. Sometimes, both sides are the evil ones.
