Heres what was expected of any 6&7 standard pupil of a primary school in the 1960s and early 70s, in Saint Lucia and possibly other islands in the region, as far as vocabulary is concern. This is an excerpt from Ronald Ridouts WORD PERFECT - BOOK 7 for primary schools. It was abysmally dark . The benighted pedestrian, having reached a cross road, despaired of taking the correct turning. Eventually he discerned a lofty post, at the top of which, there was apparently an inscription. Assuming that this must be a survival of the traditional English signpost meant to be read from the top of a stagecoach, he girded up his loins and began to climb. This arduous task was necessitated by his having only one solitary match left, which he could not risked lighting unavailingly. Near the top he struck his match cautiously and in the ensuing glimmer read: WET PAINT. (WORD PERFECT :BOOK 7- 1968) pg 8 How many of our secondary school students today may experience difficulty in providing a comprehensive interpretation of the above passage?
