Through your tireless lust of reaching The divine, note after micro note, You made the Hindu and the Muslim Your own, O Kabir reborn. When the chips are down, O saintly Maestro, millions close their wasted Eyes and listen to your purya dhanashri. A terrible man-made tandava Now rages across your beloved Varanasi; hoarse imprecations And long knives are out to disfigure The timeless melodies of Kashi Into hate-driven rant, seeking To melt the multiple hues of Kashi’s Presiding lord, the multitudinous Shiva, Into a single ruthless, relentless shade. Time for you, O Orpheus of the East, To look down and bring the music Of your laughing eyes to bear Upon this desecrating wear and tear. Drown, drown, the murderous cacophony With the plentiful rain of harmony; Freeze the soulless warrior of hate With one single blast of the music You alone can create.
