Herewith I publicly, openly and unashamedly admit/announce 1) Do I like the flute? Oh, yes, but I prefer the clarinet 2) Do I like the violin? Certainly, but I prefer the cello 3) Do I love sopranos? Of course, but give me a mezzo 4) Do I enjoy tenors? Depends on the tenor, but give me a baritone and a bass!! I love the darker sounds. 5) Do I prefer to top? Always, but I can be versatile. Ildar Abdrazakov, however, can pulverise and denigrate me any time (although the likelihood is zilch and my age rules this out.) With that stage presence, that body, those looks and above all that voice he is devastating! Normally I fall in love with female voices and once a fan, always a fan (once a detestor, always a detestor - no such word I know but thats how I feel about.... no names no packdrill) Yet Ildar Abrazakov has bowled me over for a maiden run) Watched the Mariinsky Theatre (used to be the Kirov in Leningrad now again St Petersburg) production of Verdis Attila yesterday and eff you sea kay those Russians can sing! Their politicians might be homophobic, their President might be a lunatic, but Russian singers, dancers, composers, musicians writers, are superb and supreme. Italian opera is not my favourite (prefer Deutsche Oper) but Attila is powerful (despite the usual Verdi curls and curlers and the inevitable tenor Neapolitan song or barcarolle etc) but Ildar as the title character and Anna Markarova as Odabella lead a very very strong cast. His vpoice crushes me like waves on the rocks. (He can crush me with that broad chest any day) BIO Ildar Abdrazakov [ahb-drah-ZAH-koff] has established himself as one of opera’s most sought-after basses. Since making his La Scala debut in 2001 at 25, the Russian singer has become a mainstay at leading houses worldwide, including New York’s Metropolitan Opera, the Vienna State Opera, and Munich’s Bavarian State Opera. His powerful yet refined voice coupled with his compelling stage presence have prompted critics to hail him as a “sensational bass…who has just about everything – imposing sound, beautiful legato, oodles of finesse” (The Independent). Also an active concert artist, he has performed at London’s BBC Proms and at New York’s Carnegie Hall, as well as with leading international orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony and Vienna Philharmonic.
