Here’s a gem I heard in church last week: When people age, we lose two things: 1. Our physical, youthful beauty. 2. Our “filter.” We increasingly say whatever pops into our heads. This is universally true. And it means that if we have an ugly, critical spirit, it becomes more and more obvious as we age – because there’s nothing left to mask the ugliness. No beauty or charm to hide behind, and no filter to keep the anger inside. A lot of people have been ugly their whole lives, but it’s when the masks fall away that we see what was there all along. What’s inside always comes out in the end. It was such a timely reminder. I don’t want to be painted, I want to be cleaned. When I am very old, and my natural inclination to bite my tongue is long gone, and when perhaps I’ve lost a good bit of my mind – when I’m just talking crazy, I want my crazy to be kind. I have no interest in religion to make me “better.” I need Jesus to make me new.
