Here’s a great profile by Audubon California about Kern County-based Hafenfeld Ranch – one of the 2014 California Leopold Conservation Award finalists. The award honors farmers, ranchers and other private landowners for voluntary stewardship and management of natural resources. And the Hafenfelds are among an elite list of finalists that have actively demonstrated just these types of efforts. Hafenfeld Ranch manages its certified organic cattle pastures on the family ranch and their leases with the U.S. Forest Service and Audubon’s Kern River Preserve. The ranch has a Southwestern willow flycatcher mitigation easement that shows how cattle, wildlife and water management are tied together. Their land stewardship also includes erosion control, installation of wildlife-friendly water systems and improved irrigation infrastructure.
