Here’s a hike to get 2015 off to an adventurous start on: On Sunday, January 11, our #GetHiking! groups (Charlotte, Triad and Triangle) will hike eight miles of new Uwharrie Trail in the Uwharrie National Forest west of Asheboro. The trail extends the formerly 20-mile Uwharrie Trail north from the Jumping-Off Rock Trailhead to Pisgah Covered Bridge Road. Two notable elements to this hike: passage over Little Long Mountain (pictured), which offers one of the few great panoramic views in the Uwharries, and over King Mountain, one of the few Uwharrie peaks to top 1,000 feet. Actually, there’s a third notable element to this hike: Don Childrey, author of the “Uwharrie Lakes Region Trail Guide,” just released in its second, greatly expanded edition, will co-lead the hike. Don explored the trail as a scout in its glory days in the 1970s and got to know the region intimately as a resident in the 1990s.
