Here’s one you’ll be humming all week. Well, I know I will: #634 “Will You Come and Follow Me” (Kelvingrove) Also known as “The Summons”, this lovely hymn – or, at least, the words – are attributed in our hymnal to The Iona Community in Scotland. This interdenominational community is an icon of modern Christianity which you really should Google; it is such an interesting endeavour. In reality, the words were written by John Bell, a Church of Scotland (i.e. Presbyterian) minister, broadcaster and Christian community activist. And guess what? He’s speaking at “Burst Forth”, the 2014 National Presbyterian Women’s Gathering in Richmond Hill in May 2014. Wow. He also arranged the tune Kelvingrove which is a traditional Scottish tune. To spare everyone’s blushes, I shall not direct you to, or discuss, the original words traditionally sung to this tune (although you could Google “Kelvingrove Iona Dark Side” if you felt you really had to know.) I’m quite astonished by the number of videos which use arrangements in 2/4 time; they completely lose the flavour and the ‘Scottish snap’ of the traditional tune. This one is a lovely rendition though: youtube/watch?v=P8lOfMjtxdE
