Here’s some neat news for all the archaeology buffs. Biscaynes Cultural Resources team, along with the assistance of the NPS Submerged Resources Center and the Southeast Archeological Center, recently examined the remains of a prehistoric dugout canoe submerged deep in the back country of Everglades National Park. The crew also surveyed a nearby terrestrial area suspected to contain the archeological remains of a village or camp that may be associated with the abandoned canoe. The team was excited to find that the canoe was much more intact than previously suspected. It is over 30 feet long and the stand-atop stern is almost entirely intact. Up next for the team is laboratory analysis of wood samples from the canoe that will reveal its age and the species of tree it was built from. (VLM)
