Here’s the “Secret Message” Rick Perry Left in His Bible for the New Governor of Texas It seems like something out of “Indiana Jones” or “National Treasure”: The governor of Texas left a message hidden inside a Bible, which was meant for the next elected official to find. In this case, the man leaving the message was Rick Perry, and it was addressed to incoming Texas Governor Greg Abbott. “Each Texas Gov. marks a Bible passage for their successor. Here’s what @GovernorPerry marked for me from Matthew,” Greg Abbott wrote on Twitter. According to YoungCons, many governors have repeated that tradition over the years. Abbott included a snapshot of Perry’s message, which was scrawled in a large Bible. Perry wrote, “Marked by Rick Perry for Greg Abbott 20 Jan. 15.” He underlined a specific passage of the Bible. Those verses were Matthew 20:25-28, which read: “But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” Those verses are often seen as instructing leaders –including governors — to act as servants of the people, not overlords who push their will onto the public. Rick Perry may not be perfect, but it does seem that he genuinely believes that the job of government is to serve the people, not the other way around. That’s a profoundly refreshing point of view, especially in the age of Obama.
