Hermes Trismegistus The Emerald Tablet. Here’s Isaac Newton’s translation: Tis true without lying, certain most true. That which is below is like that which is above that which is above is like that which is below to do the miracles of one only thing. And as all things have been arose from one by the mediation of one: so all things have their birth from this one thing by adaptation. The Sun is its father, the Moon its mother, the Wind hath carried it in its belly, the Earth its nurse. The father of all perfection in the whole world is here. Its force or power is entire if it be converted into earth. Separate thou the earth from the fire, the subtle from the gross sweetly with great industry. It ascends from the earth to the heaven again it descends to the earth and receives the force of things superior and inferior. By this means ye shall have the glory of the whole world thereby all obscurity shall fly from you. Its force is above all force. for it vanquishes every subtle thing and penetrates every solid thing. So was the world created. From this are and do come admirable adaptations whereof the means (Or process) is here in this. Hence I am called Hermes Trismegist, having the three parts of the philosophy of the whole world. That which I have said of the operation of the Sun is accomplished and ended. “As above, so below” is a concise statement of interpretive methology. That is, whatever the details of the transmission of Pagan religious traditions in Chirsitanized Europe, there is an unbroken line of Pagan hermeneutics that was carried in the writings and methologies of Hermeticism right through the Golden Dawn to our modern Pagan religious traditions. And note just how stark the contrast is between montheistic hermeutical methodologies and those of Hermetic traditions. In religions of The Book there is only one proper subject for hermeutical approachs to understanding the Word of the Divine and that is The Book. Thus, Judaism has the Talmud focussing on the Torah, Islam has the Tafsir for the Quran, and Christianity has it’s own hermeneutical approaches to the Bible. In Paganism, on other hand, the valid material for interpretation is, well, everything. The Emerald Tablet places us in a universe of occult meaning conveyed through analogy and correspondence. I’d distill the theses of Pagan hermeneutics to the following principles: The Goddesses and Gods live, breathe and speak through nature and All That Is. If we want to understand anything, then first we must stop and listen. Our beloved ancestors have provided us with many tools for interpreting the messages that we can hear when we attend to Them. Those tools are sometimes vague and imprecise. Sometimes we will misunderstand. Nevertheless, the exchange of energy and information is vital This exchange is how everything comes into being. And that, too, is a translation of the Emerald Tablet. May Hermes convey it to you, pure and clear in its illumination
