Herniated Cervical Discs Significantly Improve With Chiropractic Care Courtesy of: Dr. Frank Gomez sayvillechiropractor MORE THAN 85% OF THE PATIENTS TREATED IMPROVED WITHIN 3 MONTHS OF CARE By Mark Studin, DC, FASBE(C), DAAPM, DAAMLP Michael Schonfeld, DC, DABCO According to the Mayo Clinic, a spinal disc is a rubbery cushion between the individual bones (vertebrae) that stack up to make up your spine and are found in the neck, mid and lower back. A spinal disc is a little like a jelly donut, with a softer center encased within a tougher exterior. Sometimes commonly called a slipped disc or a ruptured disc, a herniated disc occurs when some of the softer jelly pushes out through a crack in the tougher exterior due to a traumatic event. A herniated disc can irritate nearby nerves or the spinal cord and result in pain, numbness and/or weakness in ones arm(s) or leg(s). The good news is that most people who have a herniated disc dont need surgery to correct the problem. Often, herniated discs can be painful and limit your function. The location of your symptoms may vary depending on where the herniation is located along your spine, most commonly in your neck and lower back and less frequently in your mid-back. The most common signs and symptoms of a herniated disc are: Arm or leg pain: If your herniated disc is in your lower back, youll typically feel the most intense pain in your buttocks, thigh and leg below the knee. It may also involve part of the foot. If your herniated disc is in your neck, the pain will typically be most intense in the shoulder and arm. This pain may shoot into your arm or leg when you cough, sneeze or move your spine into certain positions. Numbness or tingling: People who have a herniated disc often experience numbness or tingling in the body part served by the affected nerve, especially the arms, legs fingers and toes. Weakness: Muscles served by the affected nerves tend to weaken. This may cause you to stumble, or impair your ability to lift or hold items. In a recent study, Peterson, Schmid, Leemann, Ankin and Humphreys studied the outcomes of patients with neck and arm pain from MRI confirmed cervical disc herniations who were treated with spinal manipulative (chiropractic) therapy. They studied 50 patients and found that after 2 weeks of care 55.3 percent were improved, 68.9 percent at one month and 85.7 percent were improved at 3 months. They concluded that most patients in the study, including subacute/chronic patients with Magnetic Resonance Imaging confirming cervical herniated discs treated with chiropractic therapy, reported significant improvement with no adverse event. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Sayville Chiropractic office that makes it convenient for you to get the care you want in todays busy society!
