Herod was delighted when Jesus showed up. He had wanted for a long time to see him, he’d heard so much about him. He hoped to see him do something spectacular. He peppered him with questions. Jesus didn’t answer—not one word. But the high priests and religion scholars were right there, saying their piece, strident and shrill in their accusations. (Luke 23:8-10 MSG) I love the rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar. The selection King Herods Song gives me pause today. Am I ever like Herod, wanting to ask questions of Jesus, see him perform miracles, and then get angry because I dont get what I thought I wanted? Maybe this is why so many people mock and scoff God. Today, while I was watching this clip, I also paid close attention to the reaction of Jesus. In the scriptural account, like in the musical, Jesus does not respond. Why? A relationship with God is more than following a set of rules, having questions answered, or being entertained. It is a relationship that defines who and what I am and the community I am in. Oh, that I might have the grace to be defined in such a way! Lord, the remembrance of your trial and crucifixion bring us no joy, but it does bring me to me knees in humble gratitude. Today, help me to live in that humble gratitude. youtu.be/Z9ALiADrJro
