Hes summed up quite well what Ive always thought about the difference between British and American comedy. (With exceptions of course.) That Brits find much more humor in the schadenfreude of human beings and how the world and themselves dont quite live up to the fantasy. And finding the hilarity in that. Whereas Americans tend to like to see characters who represent what they wish they could be, and whose identity they can strive to somehow achieve. And often it can be just as funny. I think often that sort of unyielding American optimism which he talks about makes us uncomfortable with truly flawed characters, who are not villains, with no real chance or desire to change who they are and arent really all that interested in feeling like they have to constantly improve themselves.
