Hesy-Ra’s (sometime spelled, Hesi-Re) primary role in Kemet - TopicsExpress

Hesy-Ra’s (sometime spelled, Hesi-Re) primary role in Kemet (ancient Egypt) was that of a doctor. He lived in ancient Egypt and served under King Djoser in Egypt’s Third dynasty around 2,600 BCE. As well as being a doctor, Hesy-Ra was also a government official who held the imposing title “Chief of Dentists and Physicians” and “Chief of the King’s Scribes”. This title is revealing, because it shows that even in ancient Egypt over 4,500 years ago, there was a definite distinction between doctors and dentists. Kemet (ancient Egypt), had a strong understanding of the human body. Hesy-Ra, well known for his dental proficiency, was also one of the earliest to hint at some form of Diabetes. A papyrus record mentions Hesy-Ra’s most notable achievement is that he is the first known doctor to speculate on the condition of diabetes, observing that it resulted in “frequent urination” (which we now know is one of the cardinal symptoms of the illness). This panel is important in the study of ancient African depictions of wigs and hair. The hair which partially obscures the top of the ear is a unique detail, indicating the hair is not a wig at all. There are many fake images of Hesy-Ra. Wooden image of Hesy-Ra, Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
