Hetonas village clean-up programme-II =============================== In order to take the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan into rural hinterland, Hetona chose Kiyari (Dashgi) a remote village of Uttarakhand located at the height of around 1650 meter from sea level, in Chiniyalisaur block of District Uttarkashi. A village of around 64 households have only 14 toilets. Further toilet construction in the village is on complete halt because the local deity Nagraja put a ban on it and some of the constructed toilets were uprooted on the order of his mighty. The task is very difficult to persuade the villagers to construct toilets as they dont want to disobey their deity. Hetona under NRDWP, had a meeting with villagers on 23rd September 2014, and explained in detail the necessity of health, hygiene and sanitation. The Pashwas of deity (persons on whom devta appear) were also invited to the meeting and deity was called. During deitys entry on pashwa, we asked the deity about his objection of construction of toilets and explained to his mighty that the dirt (human excretes) is being removed from open and disposed off safely to underground. What is wrong in it? Deity only said that on the eastern site of a house toilet should not be constructed. Then we asked him to select the space at each house for toilet construction and on this deity has agreed. So the village clean-up campaign was held on 25th October, 2014 and apart from the premises of Nagraja temple and Panchayat chauk, all village paths were cleaned by the villagers themselves at the call given by Hetona. In the meeting it was vowed by the villagers that they would construct 100% toilets and make their village defecation free by the end of December 2015.
