Hey All! This is your Fresh Rep Kayla :) Seeing as it is still Filipino American Heritage Month and this cold, rainy, windy, overall horrible weather is a drag, we could all use a pick-me-up. And what better way to do it than with a wonderful song which also celebrates our heritage! Sugar Pie DeSanto (born Umpeylia Marsema Balinton) was born in 1935 and spent most of her early life in San Francisco, California. DeSanto is the daughter of an African American mother and a Filipino father (go halfies!) She is known for her unique rhythm and blues style as well as her sassy stage presence. The Godfather of Soul James Brown assisted in Sugar Pie DeSantos rise to national prominence around 1960. She is an award-winning artist and an inspiration for Filipino-Americans. Enjoy!
