Hey Everyone, Its always been my dream to follow in the - TopicsExpress

Hey Everyone, Its always been my dream to follow in the footsteps of my heroes. Woody Guthrie, John Lennon, Nina Simone, artists who lived unafraid to speak the truths about the world around them. Truly continuing the tradition of American Folk Music, which is to tell the story of the people and the trials of the time. Today, with The Body Electric Fund I feel like Im truly on the path I always wanted to be. Combining the worlds of social activism and art. I look around us and I see we have a lot of work to do. I also see a whole generation of people liberating themselves, freeing their minds from mental prisons of hate and apathy. The death of Mike Brown was a horrifying reminder that we must continue the work of our forefathers and foremothers who dedicated their lives to Civil Rights. I heard the song of Medgar Evers and saw the image of Emmet Till. I thought about his mother, and it struck me that the safety of young men of color is also a womans issue. For it effects Mothers all the world over, who worry when their child leaves the house and hope they will return. The Body Electric began as a Feminist statement and it has been a journey for me. I wrote it with Sali Grace in mind, the young woman I knew who was tragically murdered 6 years ago. I wrote it for the young medical student in New Delhi, India who was raped and killed on a public bus. I wrote it for all the women who come to our shows who have experienced abuse and are searching for healing. And now I sing it for Mike Brown, for Trayvon Martin, and all the young men of color who are tired of being targeted. The young women of color who are tired of being treated as if their lives are expendable. This is the truth I see around us today, I believe it is our duty to recognize it and to do what we can to create the change we need to bring a better, more just world for the generations to come. It may not change everything in one day, but I believe making this video and donating to Trayvon Martin Foundation and Third Wave is a step in the right direction. So I hope we can achieve this goal together and were halfway there. Lets start something. Your Friend, Alynda Lee Segarra
