Hey Facebook, Ive been following your real name debacle, and understand that youve been having some thoughts about how you can really approve peoples names without being too obtrusive about it. I mean for people who are living and working pseudonymously, this is clearly an issue that cant be resolved by drivers licenses. The problem, as I see it, is that the people who are reporting false names can be total strangers, or fans of pages, and the people who know and care about the person whos name is in question are not a part of your equation. Facebook is about friendships, right? Why dont you have people who are actually friends with the person whos name gets flagged approve that the persons name is actually what they say it is? A jillion people know Sister Roma is Sister Roma, but the DMV doesnt. Who cares what the DMV thinks! Your friends matter. And its your friends who can really vouch for who you are and the name you go by. Facebook is about mutual relationships, personal relationships. Who knows better about us than our friends? I remember not that long ago that you asked me to go through and verify a bunch of people. Do that! I wouldnt mind answering a few name challenges when I log in. In fact, if thats what it takes for me to call my friends who they are, then I would gladly do that. And for those people who flag a name, if they get dinged a few times for reporting names and those name reports get rejected, block that person from reporting names. No one should have the power forever to cry wolf and get away with it. Tell those people to stop wasting your time. I hope this helps. Im sure youve probably already thought of it, cause youre brilliant people. But figured Id say this just in case. Thanks, Eric Riley
