Hey, Hometown guy Eric here... Lots of turbulence in local media...and not just in print, though this week has been really hard for many in the paper business. All media has taken a big hit over the last decade with the emergence of technologies we all embrace, but technologies that are effecting so many lines of work. My friend Ross Weinstein posted this on FB a couple of days ago, and Im appreciative of his reference to the Tide and how we are adapting or breaking the mold. Its simple, really...we are just returning to REAL dialogue...real people...real LOCAL content. We are re-engaged with where we live. Our HOMETOWN. Ross Weinstein When you read the Virginian Pilot laid off 25% of its staff including several longtime popular writers, I realize how smart my various family, friends and colleagues, who were in the local TV, radio and newspaper business, were to get out while they did. What I uniformly hear is how much happier they are and how much they wish they had done it sooner. As the local media industry has become uniformly absorbed by publicly traded companies over the last 10 years, and as the Internet of all things is more and more at our fingers tips, the heart is being ripped out of local media, and the pursuit of revenues at all costs is rendering it soulless. Its sad, and its makes me very appreciative of radio stations like 102.1 The Tide that break the corporate mold. Thanks for taking note Ross. I appreciate you spreading the GOOD news that the Tide is bringing in. EW
