Hey, I am in a bit of a pickle everyone. I received a Virginia Uniform Summons when I was driving through Virginia a couple of weeks ago for allegedly doing 88 in a 70 mph zone (tracked by radar). In Virginia, driving over 80 mph is considered reckless driving. Which if I am found guilty is considered a Class 1 Misdemeanor and will go on my permanent criminal record. I have a court date on January 15, 2015 (in Virginia). I just found out today the seriousness of all of this. I thought that I was just going to call the court and they would would tell me the fine and it would all be done. But doing some research I found out that it is more complicated. My options seem to be hire an attorney or go in by myself on the court date and try to contest it and hope for the best (ie the officer doesnt show up or they take pity on me). Here are my questions -Does anyone have experience with going through this process? -If so, did you hire an attorney? What were the fees? -Do I have any other options in this situation? -What is the likelihood of the court lessening or dismissing my case if I go in by myself to the court? Please help me out! Right now I am thinking about chancing it and going in by myself. But I am a little concerned because of my outward appearance that I cant change (my neck tattoo and my large lobes that even if I take them out are very apparent and weird looking to people). I did call to speak with an attorney but am waiting to hear back from him. But that seems a little questionable as well because he seems to be one of those cable access attorneys who says let me tell you the facts. And I really dont want to get ripped off either. Plus I have no idea what that is going to cost either. Please please help! Tag anyone that you think might know anything. Thanks so much
