Hey, I like to read the comments from the folks that share our posts. Wow! Some are angry that we are talking about enforcing the laws that are already on the books, some are just angry and are planning on crossing the street wherever they want. Did I say, or did my tone indicate, that we were planning on an all out attack on all pedestrians and drivers? Because If I made it sound that way, I am sorry. Actually, I was just giving a heads up prior to actively focusing on the blatant violators of the laws. There are those, and you have seen them, that will intentionally walk across the road and look you right in the eye and smile, doing it just to make you the driver, angry. It works, lets be honest. There are also drivers who will not stop for anyone in a crosswalk no matter how far out in the road they are. They are just being intentionally arbitrary (better terms exist but the Chief took away my thesaurus). We are focusing on those violators. Last week as I was driving up Broadway in an unmarked car, a late teen or early twenties male rode a bike down Broadway against traffic, in the middle of the road. As I gave him a look, he smiled and yelled #$%@ you and gave me the finger. Impressive actually, because while multi-tasking with his middle digit in the air and one hand on the wheel he still rode that bike like a tiger while dodging the other beeping drivers. Nice work Skippy! He lived and continued down Broadway through the intersection of the McDonalds entrance and there was no chance of me turning around to discuss his choice of lanes or lack of professional decorum while representing the American bicyclist. Oh yes, believe it or not, no helmet either. Not a safety beaver.....not at all. So, if you have to cross your quiet tree street or west side one lane, we probably will not be hauling you off to the crowbar motel. We understand, sometimes you just have to get across the street to see Betty or pick up Spots poop from his last stop. Relax a little. We have lots of stuff to do. BUT, if you cross and cause mayhem on Main or hellishness on Harlow, we are gonna write you a ticket. For crying out loud, at least I told you in advance. The men and women of the Bangor Police Department support your right to cross the road. We will be here.
