Hey. I saw a movie. It was called This Is the End. This movie had basically an identical premise as the British Worlds End: a comedy buddy movie at the beginning of the end of the world. Interestingly, this movie doesnt use actors. Or rather, the actors play themselves. It centers around Seth Rogan and Jay Baruchel being buddies and meeting up in LA and later going to a party at James Francos house. (Is it just me, or does Jay Barachels voice and speech patterns remind you of a young Gene Levy?) Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, and Craig Robinson are also part of the main cast, but we get to see a lot of other people in cameos. I enjoyed seeing Michael Cera, who usually plays the mild mannered, awkward kid on Arrested Development, portrayed as an ass slapping coke fiend party animal. Christopher Mintz-Plasse, who played the bad guy in the Kickass movies was in it, as well as the lovely Emma Watson and Rhianna (rawr). So the movie opens up with Jay visiting Seth and Seth convincing Jay to come with him to Francos party. Jay just isnt down with the LA scene and doesnt like most of Seths LA friends. However, as the party gets going, and as Seth and Jay make a run for some smokes, the apocalypse begins, with earthquakes, fire, and the rapture. They escape back into Francos house where eventually we are left with the core group of the before mentioned people who must survive together in the house with little food and a lot of animosity between one another while the world out side burns. This is billed as a comedy, so it was sort of interesting how they mixed it with the heavy scenario of the apocalypse. I mean it could have been more lighthearted like the alien robot invasion in Worlds End, but this is a full on God is pissed, Satan walking the earth, Biblical apocalypse. Thats not to say it wasnt funny, it was, though much of it leans towards being lewd and sophomoric, which is what Rogan and the like are familiar with. A movie like this does start to make me feel a little old, as while I am familiar with most of the actors, many of them are by reputation and not because I saw the cool, young, hip film they were previously in. I am sure if I had seen more of the films I would appreciate this one even more. So overall it was solid. The plot was straightforward. The actors were basically playing themselves or caricatures of themselves, so if you like those actors you will enjoy watching them. I found the humor enjoyable (but again that all depends on what you find humorous). In all I give it 4 out of 5 bags of weed. And I just wanted to leave with this thought: I have no doubt this movie was conceived and laid out by two guys in a weekend while smoking weed, eating pizza, and playing video games. It was written, directed, and produced by Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen. And yet it was more coherent, made more sense, and had more solid (albeit simpler) plot than Star Trek: Into Darkness.
