Hey, Linux dawgs and hardcore hardware magicians (this means you, Bill Mann and Nick Djinn Kappos, I have a puzzler for you. Or at least, its a puzzler for me. I have had to FSCK the hard drive of a friend twice in the past two days so it would boot. So, you say, that hard drive is about to take a collossal shit on them, and they better back up their data? Of course. Heres the wild part. Attempts to back up the home partition to a flash drive using either the OS resident on the hard drive or to use the live DVD invariably end in a kernel crash. So their system is poised to do a nose dive and I cant back it up. Worse, I cant diagnose. My hunch is that something on the motherboard has gone tits up and throws major errors whenever I attempt to write to an external disk, but in truth I have never encountered anything like this before. What do you think is going on here, and how should I fix?
