Hey NWCF! Lets talk about an important concept that you may not have heard of before: Navicular Drop. The Navicular bone is a bone in the foot. Without going into too much detail, its basically in the arch of the foot near the ankle. The reason the Navicular bone is important is that it is the first marker of a collapsed arch, which in turn leads to a collapsed ankle, which leads to an internally rotated knee. Navicular Drop is the number one marker for ACL injuries. When performing a Squat, a Box Jump, an Olympic lift of any kind, etc. if the arch caves, the knees will follow. In any movement that we perform, its important that the knees are always driven out, and one thing to concentrate on in order to keep the knees out is keeping the arches of your feet tall. By concentrating on keeping your weight towards the outside edges of your feet, we can avoid Navicular Drop, which in turn will help avoid collapsed knees and injuries to the ACL. Below is a video by the Mobility mastermind Kelly Starrett that gives some visuals on Navicular Drop as well as some mobility drills to help avoid it.
