Hey all, I normally wouldnt post this and seek advice from my own network but I thought this is a great forum for addressing drumming issues that we all face somewhere along the line. Im going through a phase where balancing groove and chops is tricky because every gig has a different lead singer who wants a certain feel. Id like to know when you are session drumming and havent met or rehearsed anything. How do you go about knowing how to play balanced? Its quite a heated topic as some people view playing as expression so you are creatively able to play what you feel (using discernment and playing in time) while others view drums as a metronome and our sole purpose to provide the backbeat and minimal artist expression (in the form of fills).
