Hey club members! Tonight Dr Nate Keiser presented a great case on CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome). The case followed a young girl who had increased pain and abnormal blood flow into her right foot. This was a PERFECT case to follow last Thursdays talk in club! I know many of you werent there tonight due to midterms but Im still going to ask some questions that you should be able to answer. Ill give just four findings from the case. Many of you are first quarter or new to basic club but you should be able to get the big picture from these four main points: -Abnormal blood flow into the right foot. -When asked to dual task (perform a math equation) her pedal pulse (in her foot) became thready (decreased blood flow) -Vibration into right toe spread to her whole foot instead of localized to the toe -Right Saccades (generated from left brain) were worse than Left Saccades (we will be discussing eye movements this Thursday so if you dont know what a saccade is just know that the left frontal lobe wasnt working as well as the right) Based off of everything youve learned this quarter, and ESPECIALLY what we discussed last week, try and answer these questions: 1. What side brain was mostly involved? 2. Why did the vibration travel through her foot? 3. Why did complex thinking decrease her blood flow? 4. What mechanism (discussed last week) wasnt working as well for her? Dont be afraid to answer! You know I love all answers, wrong or right. Just imagine being in club and me personally calling you out. And again, everyone is welcome to come to the Tuesday night meetings. Its an incredible opportunity to see Dr. Carrick in action and connect what you learn in club with real cases. *** please let newer members answer first before more experienced students or doctors jump in ***
