Hey, did you know…? IDEA has been asked on several occasions where the term Automated Access Systems Technician came from. Why doesn’t the official title of a door systems professional include the word door? Was somebody just trying to come up with an important-sounding name to describe a person who installs or services garage doors? No, there was no effort being made to conjure a fancy or important-sounding name, and there is a logical reason why the title doesn’t include the word door. The term Automated Access Systems Technician was created in 2007, by an IDEA director, Dewey Stewart and a member of the IDEA staff. This came about when IDEA was seeking formal recognition by the U. S. Department of Labor for an industry apprenticeship program. Before this could come about, the two were advised by officials with the Springfield, Illinois Office of Apprenticeship, that the occupation would need to be recognized. Alas, there were no classifications in the entire federal government’s data bases that applied to an individual who installed/serviced residential and commercial sectional or rolling steel doors. The agency officials requested the two provide them with a name, and that it not include the word doors. The reason, they explained, was that there were other occupations that included the term door or doors, and to avoid possible rejection of the more specific occupation they were seeking, to use some other way to describe the job. Additionally, they were asked to have the occupational title begin with the Letter A. You see, the officials explained, the federal agency had some older computer equipment with which to work with, and their data bases were not as efficient as some in the private sector. To find a job classification, they were at times required to scroll through a lengthy list, in alphabetical order, which meant that it would save them time if the door industry’s technicians could have a title that started with the Letter A. And so it was that Dewey Stewart and the IDEA staffer sat down that evening, assigned to describe a door technician’s occupation without using the word door and having it start with the Letter A. When they went back to the government officials in Springfield with the occupational title: Automated Access Systems Technicians, the officials were delighted!
