Hey everybody, Im having a hard time figuring out the difference - TopicsExpress

Hey everybody, Im having a hard time figuring out the difference between a limiter and a soft compressor and when to use one instead of the other. I dunno, this may be a question for the FL Studio users.. Im not sure. Say youve got 4 kicks and you layer them in twos. Then, you import the 4 kicks into the mixer so that youve got all 4 kicks routed into 2 separate mixer channels. Now, you want to create a submix and route the 2 kick channels into said submix. Okay, say that your kicks are already clipping before you put them into the submix:. Would you lower the volume of the kicks? Put a limiter or maybe a soft clipper on them before the sub mix? Or would it be more prudent to just worry about the clipping of the sub mix instead? Also, Ive been reading that i shouldnt use a limiter on the master channel because it hurts the dynamics and that the limiter should be only for the mastering process. Well, would it also be prudent to not use limiters on the rest of the channels too? I remember reading somewhere that you should never let any channel clip no matter what. However, the FL Studio manual says not to worry about clipping. Plus, most of my favorite hip hop producers let their channels clip. So, Im really not sure about this as I lack the experience needed to make these kinds of decisions. thanks everyone for your time =)
