Hey everyone! After a month of being here at Vila, Vanuatu I thought it would be a good idea for me to write some sort of newsletter / extended status update. Words can not describe how beautiful it is here - both the landscape and the people. The land is covered in thick, tropical plants and extending over all the high mountains - down to the valleys. The not-so-perfect aspect of the wildlife here would have to be the insects. The spiders are massive and everywhere, and the centipedes grow over a foot long. We often find them in our dorm because the walls don`t go all the way to the ground. The beaches here are picture perfect. It is possible to drive around the island Vila in a bit over 2 and a half hours. The people that live here are super friendly! Always waving and smiling to others as they walk past. The base is self-sustainable. The electricity is run off of solar panels (the base is too far away from the grid) and we get our water from three water tanks. Apart from rice and flour, the food is mostly home-grown. The land-clearing we do here is done with machetes. There is a bucket shower we can use but I just swim in the nearby river. The schooling here has been amazing so far. We have had a a speakers from New Zealand and Australia so far and they have significantly strengthened my faith and knowledge of the character of God through biblical teachings and their life experiences. The earthbag house is also making slow but sure progress. We are able to work about 2 and a half hours everyday. We would like to do more, but we are running on a pretty tight schedule (5:30 wake up and asleep by 9). One day after arriving in Vanuatu, I managed to cut my feet up on some reefs and within a couple days they became quite badly infected to the point that I had an ongoing fever. -They have healed well since then. About a week ago I heard about the witchcraft that was taking place here from my peer students. They were sharing stories they had heard and personal experiences of people getting attacked by witch doctors through curses and attacks. Witch doctors are known to have the ability to change form into animals and also to fly around at night (apparently just like hitchcock). They were also telling me how it isn`t uncommon for people to be hospitalized or killed by these demonic attacks. Such activities were confirmed by the staff members at the base. I was pretty freaked out! But after a lot of prayer God has helped me to choose his peace over the fear of the enemy. For the first time in my life, I have learnt how to hear God`s voice during intercession and it was confirmed by two other people! I`m really excited to hear from him more! Please pray for the on-going protection over the Ywam base from spiritual attacks, and also that all the students would be able to raise enough money for the outreach in Thailand in two months time.
