Hey everyone! Sooo I had a midwife appointment yesterday. I have had 2 babies in the last 2.5 years and my 3rd is due in September. So we had the usual discussion of whether we want to give Vitamin K and the eye ointment at birth. Of course, Vit K for the baby. But for Eden and Cohen we declined the eye ointment, for a number of reasons. And signed a waiver releasing the responsibility from the MW should anything have happened. In a nutshell, I dont have gonorrhea or chlamydia and I am in a long term, mutually faithful relationship, this treatment dates itself back to the mid-late 1800s, if my child got an eye infection - its treatable with IV antibiotics anyways, the treatment has proven to be hit or miss in terms of its effectiveness, and quite frankly its my right to refuse this treatment. I should also note here that MOST / ALL prenatal blood work screens for the presence of STIs. And the mother can be treated during pregnancy should it be necessary. But you are all going to be surprised with what I learned yesterday. The Ontario Ministry of health has (sometime since March, 2013) mandated that all newborn babies be treated with prophylaxis erythromycin ointment. This is not in all provinces as of yet. BUT!! Heres the kicker. The midwife group/midwife is charged $5000 per day until the ointment is given. AND so are the parents. And there have been cases in Guelph where the parents refused and the medical professional (OB or MW) is now required to contact FACS and they have the right to take your baby away until the ointment is given. What.the.he-double hockey sticks. So let me get this straight.... I HAVE to put that crap in my babies eyes, but I dont HAVE to choose life saving measures, I dont HAVE to treat them for cancer, I dont HAVE to give them immunizations? As far as I know this is the only federally mandated drug in this country. And its not country - wide. My midwife said the only thing we can do is to petition the ministry of health. Thoughts?
