Hey everyone, its Dakota Joe, dontcha know? I am writing this update from Jenkins Shelter (mile 575.2) where Hutch and I are currently taking our second lunch break and we only have 5 miles to go to get to camp. Every other person in the shelter packed up in a frenzy before daybreak and hit the trail while we just relaxed and had a good breakfast. I think we are all going to the same campsite too. It is only a 15 mile hike and with 5 hours of daylight left and only 5 miles to go, well, we are not worried about a thing. Other hikers be warned: from Walker Gap (mile 566.5) to mile 574.4 there are NO water sources. Davis Farm Campsite (mile 572.2) is bone dry and it is a .05 mile side trip to get there. So when you see the blue blazes after coming down from Chestnut Knob Shelter know that you are in Walker Gap because there is no sign. The terrain from there on out will be ankle twistingly rocky so pay close attention to your footing. There are some really great views on the ridgeline too. Jenkins Shelter is in a nice location with a good water source close by but there is no typical shelter sign. There will be a post with a white blaze and a picture of a guy in a hut and that is when you head west a few yards to the shelter. #keepthedreamalive
