Hey everyone, next week is IC African Students Associations annual Africa Week! (Check out our promo video: https://youtube/watch?v=anYVaLwdaY4) Get ready for the exciting week of events! This year our theme is: Celebrating Our Ancestors in honor of our predecessors who have helped shaped Africa into the beautiful and rich continent that it is today. We will kick off the week with our inaugural speaker, Mukoma Wa Ngugi, who is a novelist, poet, and literary scholar from Kenya, currently a professor at Cornell University. (SLI credit is available!) On Tuesday, we will be screening the film Lumumba which depicts the life of Patrice Lumumba and struggle for independence for the Democratic Republic of Congo from Belgian colonial rule. (SLI credit is available!) On Wednesday, we will have a dance workshop with a new dance group on campus: Island Fusion! They will be showing us a few dance moves from all parts of the diaspora! You do not want to miss this! Thursday, we will have a panel discussion entitled: Brothers, stand up!, in collaboration with B4B, and hosted by John Rawlins from OSEMA. This event will open dialogue about how black men can maintain their identities and culture in the classroom, workplace, and everything in between. Our panelists are students Cedrick Michael-Simmons and Dubian Ade, as well as Dr. Matt Mogekwu from the Journalism Department, and Dr. Sean Eversley Bradwell from the Center for the Study of Culture Race and Ethnicity. (SLI credit is available!) Friday, we will have the Mr & Ms. ASA pageant! Come & see eight contestants show us why THEY should be Mr. or Ms. ASA! Who will take the crown? And lastly, Saturday will be the Mauya Banquet! Come and get tickets, which are free and available from 4 - 6 pm in the SAC all of next week! Join us!
