Hey everyone, ok so I did practicum on Friday so I am going to give you some pointers that Axel gave me. Some of this is probably going to seem pretty obvious but thats ok, maybe some of you will benefit :) -Read your orders carefully and follow them carefully -After you go in and introduce yourself check the iv line, mine was not running and I did not notice that until I went to hang my fluids. -Assess the iv site on pt arm, Axel said it should be assessed and flushed every shift. -Do a focused head to toe but hit everything a little bit, I forgot to assess pupils like a dummy! Make sure pt is oriented and hit your pulses!! -Get your vitals and labs right away and check your labs carefully, you will probably need to do an SBAR because something wont be right!! Read back your providers orders!!!! -Make sure you do a good teaching on NG tube, what its for, why your pt is getting it, how your pt can help make it less uncomfortable, etc. -if you have an incentive spirometer ask your pt if they have used it before, ask them to show you how to use it, teach proper way to use it!! -Check the allergy bands!! -Do hand hygiene after you take your gloves off and before you leave the room, i did it everytime I entered but forgot to do it after I would take my gloves off.
