Hey folks, Check out the article in the Sunday News Democrat about Judge Gusweiler addressing RULH eighth grade students about the Constitution. My husband, a retired history teacher from RULH says, it seems as though our illustrious Judge doesnt exactly have his facts straight. His illustration of 13 Ohio villages representing the 13 colonies and Kentucky representing England, was a little inaccurate! His idea that England was taking huge amounts of tax money was wrong. The problem was taxation without representation. Here are a few other inaccuracies, he ties the Constitution to the Revolutionary War. He has confused the Constitution with the Declaration of Independence. During the war, the government was the Second Continental Congress using the Articles of Confederation. Revolutionary War ended in 1783. The Constitutional Convention was called in 1787 because the Articles were not working. The Constitution was not ratified until 1788. He also stated that the Constitution was really the first form of voting but he has apparently forgotten about the House of Burgesses, the first elected representative body in the Colonies in 1619......the Mayflower Compact of 1620 and all of the 13 Colonial Legislatures! Also, the Constitution did not grant the right to vote to everyone at that time. And the classic comment he made........the Judicial branch exists to keep the other two branches from putting their thumb down on the little people! In my opinion, he seems to have forgotten this in the past few days! I sincerely hope that the RULH eighth graders will do some research of their own and get their facts straight! Yours truly, one of the SWRMC Little People!!!!!
