Hey folks, Dan here. Miguel will return this evening, and promptly - TopicsExpress

Hey folks, Dan here. Miguel will return this evening, and promptly give yall the rundown on everything that hit the shelves this past Tuesday. In the meantime, heres the big/NEW stuff we got in: BAD WORDS: Pitch black comedy directed by and starring Jason Bateman. Here, the TEEN WOLF TOO alum plays a crass 40-something who takes part in a spelling bee. Co-stars Allison Janney and Philip Baker Hall. Wasnt for me, but got some pretty decent reviews...NYTs Manohla Dargis liked it enough (nyti.ms/1qNWvuc) JODOROWSKYS DUNE: Very entertaining documentary about the legendary cult directors quest to craft an adaptation of Frank Herberts much beloved sci-fi novel, Dune -- later directed by David Lynch. The best moments feature Alejandro Jodorowsky talking to the camera, dictating his vision while storyboards are superimposed across the screen. Garnered some of the years best reviews; film critic Michael Phillips has a good write-up (trib.in/P7xR8X). LE WEEK-END: Jim Broadbent stars in this British drama about the disintegration-reintegration of a middle-aged couple. From the director of HYDE PARK ON THE HUDSON, VENUS, and THE MOTHER. Havent seen this, but NYTs A.O. Scott approves and David Edelstein loved it (vult.re/1jul1Ab)! NYMPHOMANIAC VOL. 1 + 2: The Danish prankster misbehaves again! Enfant terrible Lars Von Triers two-part epic follows nearly 50 years in the life of Joe, a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac (played in youth by Stacy Martin and in middle-age by Charlotte Gainsbourg). While it doesnt scale the heights of Von Triers ANTICHRIST, this is a very interesting, thoughtful, discomforting, funny, and melancholic look at a woman determined to live life by nobodys rules except her own. The splendid cast includes a Cockney-accented Shia LaBeouf, Stellan Skarsgård, personal fave Willem Dafoe, Christian Slater, and a bonkers cameo by Uma Thurman. One of the more divisive movies of 2014...Bryan, Ben and I all approve. Miguel will chime in soon. THE RAID 2: Sequel to Gareth Evans monstrously entertaining martial arts epic, THE RAID: REDEMPTION. Whereas REDEMPTION aimed for small-scale claustrophobia, this is a grand scale Yakuza/gangster epic spiked with a slew of slugfests, shootouts, and a car chase to match the likes of Frankenheimers RONIN and Friedkins THE FRENCH CONNECTION + TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A. Bens #1 movie of 2014 thus far. The critics dig it too!
